You can enable a true “Super Dark Mode” in Firefox by modifying its advanced configuration settings or using a dedicated extension. Firefox’s built-in dark theme only colors the browser interface, leaving many websites and internal pages bright white. Here is how to get a completely dark browsing experience. Method 1: The Advanced Internal Flag (No Extensions)
This built-in feature forces Firefox to render all web pages with a dark background. Open Firefox. Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter. Click Accept the Risk and Continue on the warning screen.
Type layout.css.prefers-color-scheme.content-override into the search bar.
Click the Pencil icon (Edit button) on the right side of that setting.
Change the number value to 0 (this forces dark mode everywhere). Click the Checkmark to save the changes.
Note: Change the value back to 3 if you ever want to restore system default behavior.
Method 2: Use the “Dark Reader” Extension (Highly Recommended)
If you want granular control, automated schedules, and better text readability, an extension is the best choice.
Click the three horizontal lines (Menu) in the top-right corner of Firefox. Select Add-ons and themes (or press Ctrl + Shift + A). Type Dark Reader into the top search bar and press Enter. Click on Dark Reader from the search results.
Click the Add to Firefox button, then click Add again to confirm permissions.
Press Alt + Shift + D at any time to instantly toggle the dark mode on or off. Method 3: Enable the Built-In UI Theme Ensure your browser menus match your new dark web pages. Open the Firefox Menu and select Add-ons and themes. Click Themes in the left sidebar.
Locate the Dark theme under the “Manage Your Themes” or “Disabled” section. Click Enable.
